Head Games and Youth Sports: Have We Gone Too Far?

Somehow, playing sports in this country has become just as important as learning math, science and history. Could it be that professional athletes make obscene amounts of money, especially when compared to the paltry and conversely obscene wages offered to our teachers?

I think that the culture of unregulated capitalism which begs for cutthroat competition and hyper aggressive attitudes is making this country a sad excuse for what it used to be. Children should be less attracted to the lure of a big sports salary or sporting scholarship than achieving something unique or building skills and developing the smarts to be able to innovate, think critically and interact positively with the world around them. Intelligence and wisdom have sadly become incidentals to hopefully be garnered on the way to becoming the biggest and fastest athlete or sports figure, and the connection I hear many fellow parents in my area between the youth sports programs and their children's futures in business is a very strong one.

I'm sorry to say that I'm in my thirties and sound like an old fuddy-duddy, but I just don't think youth sports provide any real benefits outside the realm of physical activity. I'd much rather have my kids running or swimming or hiking than sticking them on any kind of sports team. It's become too serious and pressurized. Little League World Series' games are now on TV... Do we really need any more undue pressure on our kids?

Glenn Beck Rally Will Be Like Moon Landing, Wright Brothers, & Rosa Parks All Rolled Into One Massive Orgasm Of American History

If there were any thoughts left in me that Glenn Beck is merely entertainment and shouldn't be taken seriously, they've taken flight and left forever. This man is a megalomaniac. He will do anything to make his money, including taking this "character" he's created to the frustrated and uneducated, jaded and angry and yelling "fire" in the crowded theater of their helplessness. This is the end of our country's credibility. Our government destroyed its own over the last decade, and Beck is doing his part to show the rest of the world just how stupid the citizenry can be. Between this rally and the protests over Park51, we as a country are announcing proudly how callous, shallow, self-serving and idiotic we can be. We all share the blame for allowing this egomaniacal demagogue to become so public a figure, and as a country, we should be ashamed. He is no patriot. He is no American. He has no values outside his own greedy ideals. How could we let this man get to this moment in time? How complacent can we have been?

I fear for my children's future. My country has officially gone to the dogs. I am incredibly depressed.

When are people going to realize that its only as insensitive and inappropriate as people WANT it to be?

Has anybody ever thought about the fact that to those wanting to build this place there is a genuine desire to use the place as a place of healing and understanding? That maybe, just maybe, this so called "hallowed ground" is not only appropriate but the PERFECT place to have a community outreach center?

Think about it: The site of a tragedy perpetuated by those who were, in their own warped opinion, devout muslims; a place where muslims of Western views and understanding would want to help erase the caricature of their religion perpetuated by that horrible act.

I hear alot of noise from the right saying they wish the muslim community would condemn the terrorists (which they have, but that's another post) and/or apologize on their behalf. In my humble opinion, this community outreach center is the most tangible and powerful statement of contrition and tolerance the muslim community could ever create. A place to promote learning, interfaith dialogue and understanding. This could be a HUGE bridge between people, an amazing opportunity for peace and understanding. But those clamoring for it to be put elsewhere are not only missing the point, they are only pushing the muslim community further away and alienating them from the rest of us.

That, my friends, is dangerous and un-American.

This building should be built.
